VMware kills another ecosystem with vCenter Server heartbeat 1.0

Alessandro Perilli is one of the top 10 virtualization bloggers in the industry and has written a pretty interesting article regarding VMwares latest OEM solution for vCenter. And what is even more interesting is the backlash of comments regarding the price and potential limitations. The reality is that VMware isn’t going to put all of their eggs in one basket for virtualization protection just because of one OEM agreement. Like any other business, VMware will help position the solution that will help sell the most ESXi licenses and that actually works to the advantage of VMware’s trusted partner Double-Take Software. One concern discussed and is certainly a trend for 2009 is customers wanting a single vendor to provide not just vCenter protection but the ability to backup virtual workloads, move physical or virtual workloads for high availability or disaster recovery as well as help provide X2X migration of workloads to provision more virtual machines quicker. The latter is what will motivate VMware. What VMware partner can help their customers adopt virtualization technology the quickest with the least impact to their production environment? That provides a significant advantage toward Double-Take Software solutions that provide all of the above as well as meets the requirement of a single vendor for all levels or protection and recovery. Considering the product is really only designed for an SQL backend won’t that exclude customers are running vCenter on Oracle? This may be another advantage for Double-Take being hardware, application and platform neutral to support all configurations versus one specific design. Here are some other differences as well that lean favorably toward Double-Take.
Double-Take leverages Full-Server Failover, and has some significant benefits over the OEM-based solution in that it’s (1) less expensive, (2) protects the entire system (OS, vCenter app, data, etc.) in real-time and (3) is easier to setup and manage.

Double-Take Software has had an application note for their VMware customers for years and it can be found on the support website for download.
